Broken Leg Overview
Your leg contains four bones and the hip
bends, knee and ankle (the fémur, the patella, the tibia, and the fibulation).
These bones can break into 2 or more pieces following an accident. If a broken
bone, either by cutting it over the fracture or by sticking it out across the
cut, is exposed to the outside, an open fracture is referred to as it is.
Sometimes it is called a fracture of the compound.
Any
of these bones can include a break in the leg:
• In the thigh is the femur. It is the bone
of the body's length and strength. To make the hip joint, the top section of
the femur is fitted into the pelvis. It can move forward, backward, sideways
and rotate in and out of this joint. It's the upper part of the femur that is
broken when you talk about a "broken hip."
• On the top of the tibia is the lower end
of the femur, which forms the knee. On the knee, the leg may swing slightly to
the front, back and even rotate
. • The kneecap glides in front of the knee
joints back and forth. The kneecap suspends the ligaments from the muscle of
the thigh and helps to lift the leg.
• The shinbone is the tibia that promotes
the weight of the body. The fibula lies below the knee next to the tibia. It's
on the outside of the leg and less than the shin.
• The ankle consists of tibia's and
fibula's bottom ends, bones of the feet, ligaments, and tendons. Severe
twisting of the ankle can lead to tibia or fibula fractures near or in the
ankle joint.

Broken
Leg Causes
Usually, it takes a lot of strength to break
the leg bones. Bones weakened somehow can more easily be broken. If the force
placed on a bone exceeds the amount that it can handle, the bone is shattered.
• Trauma that can break the leg when the
force has been high, or injury has occurred (e.g., accidents in a car,
motorcycle or vehicle all-terrain, injuries to skis and height falls).
•
The injury may cause a bone to break if a disease like cancer or other tumors
and osteoporosis has weakened the bones.
• Repeated overuse of the leg, for example
remote movements, can sometimes lead to stress fractures
Symptoms of
broken leg
Pain, swelling and deformity are the main
symptoms of a broken leg. A broken leg may be very clear but an X-ray may need
to be diagnosed.
Pain is usually severe caused by a broken bone.
Keeping the bone will reduce pain still. Broken bone movement increases pain.
• Swelling and bruising are common across
the rupture.
In these forms leg deformity may occur:
In
these forms leg deformity can occur:
Rotation: The leg is twisted underneath the
break.
Angel: the leg bends in place of the joint at
the break.
When to
look for medical attention
Certain portions of the leg may be broken
and still look like a bad strain. This can frequently happen when the ankle or
the fibula, which is the small bone next to the shinbone, are affected.
If the following conditions describe your
situation, call your doctor:
• Without a great deal of pain, you can not
walk.
• When the knob parts of the leg are
punched, it hurts.
• You worry, even if you are uncertain that
you may have a broken leg.
• If you or someone else thinks that your
leg is broken, please go to an emergency department for further assessment. You
should call 911 to an ambulance if you didn't walk.

• If
the surgery has been done, or you have already had a splint or cast, return
immediately to the hospital, if these problems arise:
o Muscle strength loss or stomach loss on
your leg or foot; some strength loss is common due to fracture pain; but if the
stomach has developed rapidly or strength has deteriorated, or the pain is
increased significantly without any relief due to your pain medication, these
may be signs of' compartmental syndrome.' The muscles and nerves of the leg may
be damaged.
o
The signs of potential wound infection are redness, fever; increased swelling,
or pain or drainage of pus due to a surgical incision.
Exams and
Tests
The doctor checks a break (fault) on the
leg. If the doctor suspects a breach of a bone, X - rays are ordered.
• The physician will also look for signs of
damage or injury to the nerve or artery. To do so, the doctor feels pulsations
and tests the strength and sensation of the injury underneath.
• If the doctor suspects that a bone that
leads to a fracture has weakened from another medical condition, other
laboratory tests may be ordered.
•
Stress break diagnosis is often hard, and special studies beyond X-rays may be
necessary.
